How to build a strong and diverse ministry staff

At Church Community Builder, we believe that if you hire a bunch of people with the same skills, personality, and passions as you, you are destined to fail. A team that represents diversity in culture, giftedness, and backgrounds is critical for well-rounded ministry success.

A few weeks ago, we had the chance to sit down with Tim Samuel, CFO for Bridgeway Community Church in Columbia, MD, for our webinar series. During the discussion, Tim outlined some incredible insights for how Bridgeway has been able to attract over 4,000 people from 50 different countries through a strong and diverse ministry staff and Church Management Software.

In case you missed it, here’s a recording of the the webinar:

How to build a strong and diverse ministry staff

Here are a few of my favorite takeaways around how you can begin building a strong and diverse team for reaching your community:

  1. Determine where your church is on the culture matrix. The first step to reaching a multicultural community is determining who your church is reaching currently.
  2. Do a 'SCOT' analysis. What are your strengths, challenges, and opportunities? What is your story? Every challenge should be coupled with at least one opportunity.
  3. Do regular 'in-takes'. On a regular basis check in with your staff. Conduct audits on personality, strengths, passions, and successes. What types of personalities or strengths are missing from your team? Your next hire should be able to fill a specific unfulfilled role.

Diversity is ever-increasing in our communities. I encourage you to make diversity and inclusiveness a priority in your ministry.

Is your staff diverse? What would you say are your greatest strengths?
