Numbers get a bad rap in the church world. Leaders can often hear that they ‘only care about the numbers’, without the realization that each number counted in a worship service or volunteer activity represents a face, a name, a story, a life in need of transformation.

However, as it turns out, numbers mattered very much to Jesus. In his parable of the lost sheep (Luke 15), it’s pretty clear that the shepherd knew he had exactly 100 sheep. He also knew when one was missing, and I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I could tell 99 sheep from 100 sheep if I weren’t counting. Numbers mattered in that story, and numbers matter to God. That means numbers need to matter to church leaders.

But what numbers will really mean the most when it comes to building true community in your church? How do you know which numbers to monitor, and what they’re telling you? It can start to feel like you’re playing a frustrating arcade game — one number pops up, and just as you figure out what to do with it, it’s disappeared and another pops up in a different area.
